Shary Boyle Donates Sculpture to Save Inspirations

BIG NEWS!: Celebrated contemporary artist Shary Boyle has donated the first of an elegant new porcelain edition to support our campaign to save Inspirations Studio. Boyle’s piece, entitled “Baubo Inverted,” will be offered as a thank you gift to the next donor who contributes $5,000 to the crowdsourcing campaign to rescue the endangered Studio.

Boyle’s “Baubo Inverted” is a small porcelain figurine (12 x 10 x 18 cm) in the tradition of ancient Greek “Eleusian Mysteries” totems. The Mysteries were fertility rites, whose secret initiations represented the cycle of life. Baubo was the Crone of the maiden, nymph and crone trilogy. She is known as the old woman whose shameless joy in her own sexuality alleviated Demeter’s (the goddess of the harvest) depression over the loss of her daughter Persephone to the Underworld.

Shary Boyle lives in Toronto and works across diverse media, including sculpture, drawing, installation and performance. Collected and exhibited internationally, Boyle represented Canada with her project Music for Silence at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. Shary Boyle’s work was included in Ceramix : Ceramics and art from Rodin to Schutte, organized by the Bonnefantenmuseum in the Netherlands and la maison rouge in Paris, France, 2016. In 2017 her sculptures were featured at South Korea’s Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, and in the Phaidon, UK publication Vitamin C: Clay and Ceramic in Contemporary Art. Boyle’s first public art commission will be installed Spring 2018 on the front grounds of the Gardiner Ceramic Museum in Toronto.

Our campaign has been supported by a number of eminent artists and craftspeople, who appreciate the value of the arts in creating meaning and transforming lives. For Boyle, “art heals, propels positive energy into the city, changes peoples perspectives about what they’re capable of, communicates what words can’t.”

We are overwhelmed and delighted by the generous donation.

This piece joins a collection of ceramics created by Inspirations Studio members – including ornaments, tumblers, bowls, platters, and vases – which will be given to campaign supporters who donate smaller amounts. Details are on the Canada Helps campaign page.…/pag…/save-inspirations-studio/
